Super Bowl Sunday Special: 1957 NFL Championship Game — Cleveland vs Detroit

If you’re like me you love football but twelve hours of Super Bowl pregame analysis is overkill. If that’s the case here’s something for you to enjoy while you’re preparing for the big game!

1957 marked the 25th annual National Football League championship game held on December 29, 1957 at Briggs Stadium in Detroit, Michigan. The game pitted the home town Detroit Lions against the Cleveland Browns. Detroit had faced Cleveland three times before with the championship on the line with the Lions winning in 1952 and 1953. The Browns, who had wrested the title away by crushing Detroit 56-10 in 1954, had won the Eastern Conference with a record of 9-2-1 while the Lions (9-4) took part in one of the greatest comeback victories in NFL postseason history. On the road and trailing the San Francisco 49ers 27–7 in the 3rd quarter of the 1957

Western Conference Playoff game, Lions quarterback Tobin Rote rallied the team back with 24 unanswered points to beat the 49ers 31–27 at Kezar Stadium.

55,263 were on hand as the George Wilson coached Lions, without future Hall of Fame quarterback Bobby Layne, prepared to take on an always dangerous Cleveland squad led by rookie of the year Jim Brown with the legendary Paul Brown calling the Xs and Os.

Unfortunately for the fans in Motown, this would be the last time the Lions would play for a championship.

Ray Scott had the play by play duties for NBC.
