July: Recommend a Show and Win!

A few of our current shows only ran one season and we’re rapidly approaching the end of the series. We’re going to leave it completely up to you to decide one of the radio classics that will join our line up. Just recommend a show by commenting below, or emailing Jeff, and you’re entered! How easy is that?!?!?!

At the end of the month we’ll randomly draw a name and not only will you win a copy of the offbeat and enjoyable Hello, Everybody!: The Dawn of American Radio but we’ll also add your recommended show to our weekly schedule!

It’s a great book to win because with clarity, humor, and an eye for outsized characters forgotten by polite history, Anthony Rudel tells the story of the boisterous years when radio took its place in the nation’s living room and forever changed American politics, journalism, and entertainment.

Feel free to recommend as many shows as you’d like all we ask is that you post each as a separate comment (or email) and that you make sure that each request is different.

We’ll announce the winner on August 1st.

July Contest: Help Spread the Word!

Every website needs visitors and the best way to pump up the number of people who stop by is to spread the word! This month we’re having a contest for you to share our site around the web and win a great book in the process. All you need to do is post a link to AMFWOTR somewhere around the web encouraging people to pop by and check us out. A pretty easy contest to enter, that’s for sure. Once you’ve shared the link just post it in the comment section here or email Jeff and you’re entered!

Here’s an example of what we’re talking about: http://www.stratfanforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73897

The prize is a copy of John Dunning’s wonderful On the Air: The Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio! 840 pages packed with great information about the programs that really made it the golden age of radio. The book retails for $75.00 but you can get it free.

You can enter as many times as you’d like but please make sure that each link is completely different, i.e. no multiple postings on Facebook or such… The contest ends July 31st and we’ll announce the winner on August 1st!

1000 Plus

Just over six months into running the website we’ve hit over one thousand posted programs – not even counting the episodes we’ve included on the podcasts! Of course, for many, this isn’t much of a big deal because of the heavy hitter sites out there that have 20,000 or more shows for your listening pleasure. And I love those sites too, don’t get me wrong! They’re great and I peek around, all the time, they never fail to have some files that I’ve never had a chance to add to my collection.

I take a little bit of pride in our first thousand shows because we’re just a bit different from the sites you find tons and tons of old time radio links simply because we add information that you really don’t find alongside the shows you’re listening to. In the world of OTR online you tend to either find an episode with no background info about that show or you can find out who appeared in that episode but you’ll need to track down the audio file elsewhere – here at AMFWOTR we strive to bring you the best of both!

Elliott and I take great pride in the fact that we aren’t trying to sell anything when it comes to our website here. You don’t see a lot of advertising sprawled across the site and, at the end of the day, we decided not to promote any OTR seller simply because we don’t think you should pay for the opportunity to kick back and enjoy this amazing entertainment. Granted, in the near future, you might see a link if you’d like to buy us a cup of coffee if you dig our site but it’s not like we’re going to make you pay up to enjoy our posts!

So here’s hoping that you’re having a great time visiting AMFWOTR because we sure are having a blast putting it all together!

Excuse the Dust Today

You’ll have to excuse a little bit of dust today as the site has undergone some coding upgrades. I’ll have everything set straight by midnight tonight; I got a bit of a late start today seeing I was at work until 4pm MST.

Thanks for understanding!

Memorial Day

I just wanted to take a moment to remind those of you here in the states, who stop by to listen to all of our shows, to remember that today’s holiday is not about barbeques, beer, and a day off with pay. Memorial Day is meant as a time to set aside a moment and give thanks to those who paid the ultimate price to keep America the Land of the Free.

Eight New Additions to the Lineup in May

I’ll be adding eight shows to the AMFWOTR lineup beginning tonight!

Sundays you’ll hear radio’s last bid to turn the tide against television – The Big Show.

Mondays bring Orson Welles in The Lives of Harry Lime.

Tuesdays hold mystery and terror with The Whistler.

Wednesdays mean it’s time for tales to tingle your spine on Quiet Please.

Thursdays are a great time to down a few over at Duffy’s Tavern.

Fridays take us back to the days when the world was engulfed in flames as the Allies battle the Axis powers on Words at War.

Saturdays take us to Wistful Vista and Fibber McGee and Molly.

Also, starting tonight, I’ll be posting an episode of The CBS Radio Mystery Theatre (just before the witching hour) each and every night!

There’s always something new going on here at AMFWOTR so keep stopping by to enjoy some of the best of classic radio!

Audio Player Issues

You may have noticed that the embedded mp3 player hasn’t been working properly over the past few days. When I say not working, I mean that the player hasn’t been showing up in any of the posts or pages. Unfortunately this isn’t anything I’ve had control over.

I use the Google audio player for the posts and it seems as if something has happened with the url that the code points to. I’ve read that other websites that use the code are having the same issues as you’ve found here on AMFWOTR. I’m not sure if Google will be fixing this problem or not but it has been about three days that the code hasn’t been working properly. In the meantime I’m using a workaround code instead. I’ve also gone back through the last two weeks of shows to tweak the posts so that the audio player works on those.

Hopefully Google will address this issue so I don’t have to go through over 600 show postings but I’ll wait a couple more days to see if this gets fixed.

Sorry, No Podcast This Week…

Take the micI was ready to put together last week’s podcast when I got hit with mandatory OT at work both Saturday and today. I’ll be stuck working 16 straight days so that tossed a wrench into the works.

I’ll do my best to have a show up for Saturday the 13th!!!
